The Auburn School District Board of Directors recognizes Dave Moynihan, counselor at Dick Scobee Elementary, for his outstanding service, at 7 p.m. Monday in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Moynihan, who is in his eighth year at Scobee, became a school counselor after a 20-year career with Young Life youth ministry.
He enjoys the students and his work.
“Dick Scobee has a great staff,” Moynihan said. “They really care about kids.”
Principal Adam Couch added: “Dave’s commitment to serving the whole child has propelled our staff towards a better focus on relationships with kids in the context of helping them achieve academic success.”
Moynihan is an avid bike rider and, once the nicer weather begins, he usually makes the 15-mile ride from his Renton home to work at least four days per week. His vacations focus on biking as well. In 2010, he and his wife completed a bike trip from Vienna, Austria to Budapest, Hungary. This summer they will be taking a bike trip in the Dordogne Valley in France.

• The school board presents the Gold Star Volunteer Award to Kathy Martin on Monday.
After teaching French to middle and high school students for 30 years in Colorado, Martin does whatever she can to help in her grandchildren’s classrooms at Lakeland Hills Elementary. Her duties include working individually with students in math and reading, making copies, grading papers and even making 160 crepes for the recent Dr. Seuss Night.
Martin is a full-time grandma now that she has retired from teaching. She began volunteering at Lakeland five years ago when her granddaughter was in second grade. That granddaughter now attends Mt. Baker but her grandson is in second grade now and her younger grandson will start kindergarten next year.
“I like being back in the educational setting. Lakeland has an exceptional staff and an exceptional principal,” she said.
Martin loves all things French and meets monthly with two different groups of French speakers to keep up her linguistic skills. She likes to read, go on walks and travel.
• The school board recognizes Yesenia Scearcy, a fifth-grader at Alpac Elementary, for being an outstanding student on Monday.
Scearcy has attended Alpac since she was in preschool.
According to staff, she is friendly, positive, caring and outgoing.
Teacher Gail Storrs, said Scearcy is “hard working, conscientious and has a wonderful sense of humor.”
Scearcy is active at school. She plays the violin in the orchestra, performs in the fifth grade choir and is a key player on the girls’ basketball team. Her favorite subjects are reading and math.
Scearcy hopes to study law and become the first female Latina president of the United States.
