4 Auburn-area wrestlers to compete in NCAA championships March 17-18

Mangrum, left, an Oregon State University 141-pound sophomore, earned an at-large bid to the tournament. Mangrum, 18-7 on the season, will take on junior Vincente Varela (20-13) from Hofstra in the first round next Thursday. Mangrum also competed in the NCAAs last year, going 3-2.

At Auburn Riverside, Mangrum snagged three state titles – 125 pounds as a sophomore in 2006, 140 pounds as a junior in 2007 and 145 pounds as a senior in 2008. He capped his career with a magnificent run at Mat Classic, earning three falls and a 23-7 major on his way to the title.

A win in the first round will earn Mangrum a shot at top-seeded Kellen Russell (33-0) of Michigan.

Onufer, right, a 165-pound junior at Wyoming, enters the tournament as the No. 7 seed. He will face The Citadel’s Turtogtokh Luvsandorj (38-8) in the first round. Onufer, 26-2 on the season, is competing in his third NCAA meet.

In high school, Onufer, right, was first at 160 pounds as a junior in 2006. As a senior, he went undefeated and captured the 171-pound title with a four-pin performance.

Also making an appearance in the NCAAs are Boise State’s Jake and Kurt Swartz.

Jake Swartz, left, a 174-pound redshirt freshman, has compiled a 18-14 record for the No. 9 Broncos. Jake, who was the 189-pound state champion in 2009, will open the NCAAs against Matt Fullowan (27-13) of Pennsylvania’s Franklin and Marshall College.

Older brother Kurt Swartz, a senior at Boise State, has a 13-8 record and will kick off the tourney against No. 4 seeded Josh Asper (31-2) of Maryland in the 165-pound division.

Kurt Swartz, right, won a pair of state titles – at 140 pounds as a junior in 2005 and as a senior at 171.
