Auburn’s close mayoral race tightened a bit more as of the latest numbers Friday night.
City Councilmember and Deputy Mayor Nancy Backus holds the edge over City Councilmember John Partridge. Backus, seeking to become Auburn’s first female mayor, has received 5,993 votes so far in the combined total of King and Pierce counties, to John Partridge’s combined 5,833 votes,
In King County, however, Partridge has actually overtaken Backus, 5,282 votes or 50.50 percent, to Backus’ 5,154 votes or 49.27 percent. Backus’ stronghold continues to be the Lakeland Hills section of Auburn in Pierce County, where she holds a 839 to 551 vote advantage, or 60.27 to 39.58 percent. Only 160 votes separate the two.
“It’s close, and we will remain optimistic. And we look forward to making history in Auburn,” Backus said.
Partridge was upbeat.
“I’m encouraged by the results … I’ll be watching closely the next three or four days to see how things continue to trend,” he said.
For City Council Position 6, incumbent Rich Wagner holds a narrow 81-vote lead over the challenger, Michelle Binetti, in combined King and Pierce county totals.
Election results will be updated again on Tuesday and on most subsequent weekdays. The election is certified Nov. 26.
