Under sunny skies, the chutes opened for the 15th season of Thoroughbred racing at Emerald Downs last Friday.

And it was ladies first.

Venerable jockey Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo rode favored Polish Dollar to a 2¾-length victory in the first race. She did it again in the second race, winning aboard Skimming the Wave.

Picking up where they left off last year, super filly No Flies On Doodle and jockey Gallyn Mitchell prevailed again – this time in a sprint. Man and horse held off Kaweah Princess by a neck to capture the 5½-furlong opener in a swift 1:02 flat.

No Flies On Doodle, owned by Auburn’s Keith Swagerty and trained by Vann Belvoir, picked up $11,000 to boost her career purse earnings to $106,052.

A lively crowd of nearly 10,000 ushered in the new season. Forty flat-screen TV sets were given away to lucky fans.

Racing resumes Friday with first post at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday cards begin at 2 p.m.
