The Auburn High wrestling team enjoyed an afternoon of near perfection on Saturday.

The Trojans went a perfect six-for-six in the championship round of the Kelso Invitational, which proved good enough for a third-place overall finish.

Auburn, which brought just 10 wrestlers to the tournament, finished with 172.5 points. Kelso won the tournament with 195 points followed closely by Wenatchee (193).

All told, however, the Trojans couldn’t have performed at a much higher level, particularly in the finals.

“A team gets on a roll and everybody starts winning,” Auburn coach John Aiken said. “If the guy ahead of you wins, it gives you a little more incentive to be on board.”

The Trojans certainly were on board on Saturday.

Steven Chacko started the string of titles, outlasting Kelso’s Jordan Evald in the 103-pound championship, 6-3. Kelly Maughan followed suit at 125, setting the stage for Graham Davis (152). Jake Swartz and Dylan Rutledge went back-to-back at 171 and 189. Auburn heavyweight Nick Conlan polished off the perfect performance with a pin of Wenatchee’s Michael Marboe. Conlan’s pin on the final match of the tournament kept Wenatchee from passing first-place Kelso in the team race.

“We didn’t talk about going 6 for 6. We talked about people being a little tired and traveled, so there was adversity and we wanted to be the ones who focused and stepped up from that,” Aiken said.

Auburn’s Swartz was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.

AMV CROWNS FIVE

As good as Auburn was in Kelso, Auburn Mountainview was just as impressive in its own tournament on Saturday.

The Lions secured five titles in the first Tournament of Champions, held at Auburn Mountainview High. Auburn Mountainview advanced seven wrestlers in the finals.

Bringing home gold for AMV included: Drew Dacey (125), T.J. Peretti (135), Tyler King (140), Cody Mangan (145) and Kristian Agemotu (215).

Matt Anderson (112) and Jericho Urmenita snagged second-place finishes for the Lions.
