The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 168 calls for service between Feb. 23 and March 1, among them the following:

Feb. 23

Fuel spill: 2 p.m., (Auburn). Valley Com dispatched Engine 31 to a fuel spill involving a semi-truck undergoing maintenance that had accidentally rolled over a curb and punctured its fuel tank. Maintenance personnel estimated that 25 to 30 gallons had entered the property’s catch basin storm drain. Engine 31 contacted the Department of Ecology and coordinated its response to the scene for clean-up and reporting.

Feb. 24

Service call: 10:48 a.m., (Auburn). Firefighters responded to a request from a senior citizen on Lea Hill who needed help changing her smoke detector batteries. The woman was struggling to remove one smoke detector from the mounting bracket on the ceiling and reinstall two others. Firefighters changed the batteries on all three smoke detectors ensuring that they worked before returning to their station.

Feb. 25

Attic fire: (Auburn) Valley Com dispatched firefighters to a house fire. Observing a small amount of smoke, firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to detect a smoldering fire in the attic. Fire investigators later concluded that an electrical wire had ignited and heavily charred three trusses supporting the roof. The occupants were already out by the time firefighters arrived.

Feb. 26

Arm fracture: 2:30 p.m., (Auburn). Firefighters received a report of an elderly woman who had fallen while walking and hurt herself. Firefighters found the woman lying on the floor complaining of right arm pain, and quickly determined that she had broken her right arm. Firefighters splinted the arm, and an ambulance transported the woman to Auburn Regional Medical Center.

Feb. 28

Motor vehicle collision: 12 p.m., (Pacific). Responding to a motor vehicle accident at Ellingson Road and Highway 167, firefighters found a man in his late 20’s who had sustained a broken bone of some type after a vehicle struck his motorcycle. Firefighters stabilized the man, and an ambulance transported him to Auburn Regional Medical Center.

March 1

Automatic fire alarm: 11:19 a.m., (Lea Hill). Valley Com dispatched Engine 34 to Gentry Walk Apartments to handle an automatic fire alarm. By the time firefighters got there, they found the building already evacuated and water pouring out of a second-floor apartment unit. Engine 34 personnel entered the apartment and discovered that the sprinkler head in the restroom had spontaneously activated. Engine 34 crews shut down the sprinkler system then helped salvage items in the affected unit and items in the unit below. The apartment manager was in contact with a private clean-up company by the time Engine 34 left the scene.
