When we elect our City Council members to office, we expect them to perform their duties, be independent thinkers and work as a team for the betterment of our city.

They have a responsibility to the citizens of Auburn to perform those functions, as well as attend and participate in the City Council meetings.

Recently, Virginia Haugen walked out of a council meeting, without so much as a valid explanation to the citizens present or the remaining council members.

Apparently, this was due to a disagreement with what was being stated during an open discussion period at the council meeting. This has the makings of the kid on the playground who doesn’t like the game being played, so they take their ball and go home.

I have no problem with a council member being a “watchdog” on the city and making sure things are being done right. But do you properly represent your citizens by walking out of a meeting?

I believe Virginia owes the citizens of Auburn and the City Council an apology for this childish behavior, and if she really doesn’t want to participate in the running of the City of Auburn, maybe she should resign from the council.
