The Evergreen State College in Olympia recently honored Spencer Murphy, of Green River College, with a Teacher of Excellence Award, honoring teachers who have had a significant impact on the lives of students.

Incoming Evergreen students were asked to nominate their former instructors for the award, presented by Dr. Michael Zimmerman, the college’s vice president for Academic Affairs and provost.

“Most of us can point to a pivotal experience in our education when a teacher noticed, encouraged, or influenced us. Maybe that teacher bolstered our confidence; maybe she or he changed the course of our lives,” Zimmerman said. “Because Evergreen values the art and practice of high quality teaching, we ask incoming students to consider former instructors who made a profound positive impact. This award recognizes Spencer Murphy as a Teacher of Excellence who inspires and makes a real difference in students’ lives.”

In nominating Murphy, former student Zachary King wrote: “Mr. Murphy’s ability to objectively present philosophical imperatives to his students was a breath of fresh air. His passion for philosophy illuminated the very fabric of the classroom and enriched my learning experience beyond what I had previously been accustomed to. My opinions and beliefs were profoundly shaped by the way Mr. Murphy presented the material for his philosophy courses. I would not be been able to critically and honestly reflect on my beliefs and ideas without the amazing teaching ability Mr. Murphy adheres to.”

Evergreen has been recognizing Teachers of Excellence since 2011.
