Rebecca Nelson, a senior at Auburn High School, was selected as a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.
Rebecca was identified as one of 5,000 Hispanic/Latino high school students from a pool of more than 200,000 Hispanic/Latino high school students who achieved a minimum score for their region in the 2007 PSAT/NMSQT/PAA and hold a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students like Nelson, and to share information about these academically prepared students with colleges and universities.

The Grace Community Church Children’s Ministry presented Gildo Rey Elementary School students and principal Robin Logan with 453 emergency kits. Each kit contains comfort items for one child during the first three hours of an emergency situation. Items include: bottled water, white socks, garbage bags, hand sanitizer, fruit snacks, granola bar, card game and more. … The Auburn High School “Trojan” marching band captured first place in the A Division at the recent Peninsula Classic Marching Band Competition in Silverdale. The Trojan color guard also earned top prize as Best Auxiliary overall, outcompeting 12 other guards. …
Auburn School District won the Association of School Business Officials International’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program for excellence in fiscal reporting for the 2006-07 school year. The award, the highest recognition for school district financial operations offered by ASBO, is only conferred to school systems that have met or exceeded the standards of the program. This is Auburn’s 20th year in a row receiving this award. …
Pioneer Elementary School students kicked off their “Ride Your Bike to Cool the Planet” program this week. The program, sponsored by the Bicycle Alliance of Washington, REI and the Forest Stewardship Council, educates students on the importance of using cycling and walking as alternative modes of transportation.
The Auburn School District Board of Directors recently honored:
• Gold Star Volunteer Award: Anne Chatman for her devoted work with students and staff at Lea Hill Elementary and Rainier Middle School. Chatman began her volunteer work 14 years when she and her family moved to Auburn. Chatman primarily works with students on their reading and vocabulary. “I see a need to help out in the classroom and there are not a lot of volunteers, so I feel blessed to be able to help out. It’s a lot of fun,” Chatman said.
• Outstanding student: Jhordin Prescott, fourth-grader. Ilalko Elementary School. A 4.0 student, Prescott enjoys jazz and hip/hop dancing. A classroom helper and student council representative, she always is looking for ways to share knowledge with her classmates. She spends her free time at home reading many books and playing with her younger brother.
• Outstanding service: Darci Brewer, dean of students, Auburn Mountainview High School. She personally has mentored students to graduation and attributes a solid advisory program at Mountainview for those successes. She has risen above the traditional call of duties and has committed to making home visits with parents and students when necessary and bolstered the school’s Thursday night program, which encourages students to work on school assignments, study for exams and prepare for presentations, including student-led Conferences. “It is all about the personal connection, and that kids know I really care about them and their future,” she said.
