The awards keep coming for former Green River Community College baseball player Bryan Marquez.
The New Mexico State shortstop was selected to the Louisville Slugger Division I All-American team and named the 2009 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association District Player of the Year for District VIII.
Marquez, a senior, had a .420 batting average, earning 87 hits in 207 at-bats in Western Athletic Conference play. Marquez had 22 home runs, 85 RBIs and 13 doubles. He also stole five bases and struck out just 28 times. He was ranked in the top 10 nationally in runs scored, RBI, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He also was among the top 10 national leaders in RBI per game, total bases and home runs per game.
His performance this season helped the Aggies win a school-record 44 games.
The award recognizes Marquez’s performance up to regional competition.
Marquez joins such auspicious All-American company as San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 pick by the Washington Nationals in the Major League Baseball amateur draft, and North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, who was picked second in the draft by the Seattle Mariners.
Marquez also was honored as a District Player of the Year for District VIII.
“This honor has me in awe,” Marquez said. “I know there are some good players in the district, and I can’t believe that I got this. I thank all the people that helped me better myself along the way, like my parents, coaches, teammates and family.”
Marquez, who helped his team break numerous school records, also is a PING! Baseball.com first-team All-American. He was named National Player of the Week and WAC Hitter of the Week on March 16.
As of press time, Marquez had yet to be chosen in the draft, but several rounds were remaining.
