Washington State House Republicans selected Rep. Drew Stokesbary, R-Auburn, as one of two assistant floor leaders in a meeting Thursday night.

The Leadership reorganization comes following Shelly Short’s departure from the House. Short was appointed to the state Senate for the 7th Legislative District earlier this week.

With his selection, Stokesbary, 32, becomes the youngest member of Leadership in any of the four legislative caucuses.

As assistant floor leader, Stokesbary will help manage legislation and debate on the House floor and represent Republicans in negotiations with majority party floor leaders. He also provides input in House Republican leadership meetings, including legislative strategy and policy decisions.

“We have a very talented caucus. I appreciate it when a member wants to be a part of our Leadership team. It takes courage and commitment,” said House Republican Leader Dan Kristiansen. “Drew Stokesbary is a natural fit for the assistant floor leader position. He’s an excellent communicator and will be an asset for our caucus as we navigate policy debates this year.”

First elected in 2014, Stokesbary recently began his second term in the state House. In addition to his assistant floor leader role, Stokesbary serves as assistant ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee and as a member of the House Finance and Education Committees.
