Auburn youth attends Evergreen Boys State, earns scholarship

American Legion Auburn Post 78 selected Michael Zendejas to participate in the American Legion Evergreen Boys State program, a one-week intensive education program of government instruction for high school students.

The program was held the week of June 18-24 at the Warm Beach Conference Center in Stanwood. It is a participatory program where each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.

Zendejas, a homeschooled student from Auburn, had the roles of senator and party precinct officer.

He also earned a certificate of achievement and was presented the 2017 Samsung American Legion Scholarship in the amount of $1,250 and is a national finalist for a $10,000 college scholarship.

The Samsung Scholarship recognizes excellence in academic pursuits and dedication to the community, attributes which are keeping with the efforts of the US Service men and women who helped maintain freedom for the citizens of South Korea which is why Samsung sponsors this scholarship.

At American Legion Evergreen Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, guest speaker presentations, talent show and patriotic celebration. High School juniors are selected by local American Legion posts. Mentoring of youth is one of the Four Pillars of The American Legion.
