Regarding “America’s monster” (Our Turn editorial, Reporter, Nov. 17):
This may be the worst editorial I have ever read. Inaccurate, misleading, illogical, insulting.
The title is misleading. What about the massacre in Norway in 2011? The November 2015 attack in Paris? Both happened despite some of the most restrictive gun laws anywhere. Just two examples.
He didn’t mention the “truck murders” in France and more recently in New York. No guns involved in those.
And we should think like Hercule Poirot – an entertaining but fictitious character? Right.
The author presents a few statistics. But this is such a complex subject, no one (or two) statistics begins to describe the situation.
And such bizarre reasoning:
How does he get from the “… good guy with a gun …” to this “just world fallacy …?”
I’m mystified by that one.
I do not know a rational person who thinks that either murder or rape victims somehow deserve their fate. And you say the NRA and President Trump use this twisted line of reasoning? Insulting.
Is he joking when he writes “… arming yourself will not keep you, or your loved ones, safe from the terrorist … the mugger … the abuser … the child”… ? The child?
What?
As to self-defense, if he did any research at all, then he knows that people frequently defend themselves and their families with firearms. Can they prevent all such attacks? No, but preventing some is a life saver. Not fallacy, Mr. Stills, reality.
I am disappointed that the Reporter would print such a piece of trash. But, then, I guess we get what we pay for.
