Tyler King may have been defeated three times this season by Enumclaw’s Josh Musick, but when push came to shove on the 152-pound championship mat at this weekend’s Mat Classic XXII Washington State Championship at the Tacoma Dome, it was all King.
King, who finished third at 135 at last year’s championships, defeated Musick 2-0 in the title match to give the Lions one of their three title winners at the tourney.
Also finishing first for Auburn Mountainview were senior TJ Peretti, who defeated James Bradley of Yelm 5-0 to win the title.
Peretti, who was third at 130 in 2009, swept through the competition in his matches, not giving up a single point in four matches, winning two by pin and one by a 9-0 margin.
Senior Lilia Gudyzuk also captured a title in the 152-pound girls division with a 4-1 decision over Seini Anau of Mount Tahoma High School.
Gudyzuk won two of her four matches by pin on the way to her first state title.
Also adding to Auburn Mountainview’s seventh-place 81-point team finish, were placings by Tyke Reid and Drew Dacey.
Dacey grapped fifth-place at 125 with a 1-minute, 22-second pin over Wyatt Maguire of Mount Spokane.
Reid, a 103-pound freshman, captured fifth in his division with a 9-2 win over Glacier Peak’s Joseph Bratz.
Yelm slipped by defending champs Enumclaw 148.5 to 142 in the team competition to claim this year’s 3A title.
