The Auburn School District Board of Directors recently recognized Lila Jenkins, office manager at West Auburn High School, as the outstanding staff member of the month.
Jenkins grew up in the school district, attending Evergreen Heights and then Lake View when it opened, Cascade and graduating from Auburn High. She has worked for the ASD since the day after she graduated from high school.
She began as a summer student helper, subbed for three years and landed a permanent position as an office assistant at Auburn High. Four years later, she moved to West Auburn as attendance secretary and has been the office manager at West Auburn for 14 years.
As office manager, Jenkins does bookkeeping, substitutes, payroll, building uses, helps organize graduation and anything else to help keep the building running smoothly.
“I love the kids at West Auburn,” she said. “Some of them are there for five years. You really get to know them as a person.”
The school board also recognized Majak Mabil, a fifth-grader at Evergreen Heights Elementary, as the outstanding student of the month.
Mabil shows great leadership in and out of the classroom. He always does his best, strives to make everyone feel included and considers other’s feelings. He loves to learn and often takes time to do extra work to advance his learning. His favorite subjects are math, science and P.E.
When not at school, he enjoys soccer and basketball.
Earth Heroes
Carol Barker and Auburn School District Child Nutrition Services will be honored for their environmental stewardship at the King County Earth Heroes at School awards ceremony May 3 at Maplewood Greens in Renton.
In 2017, the King County Green Schools Program, the City of Auburn, and the University of Washington teamed with the school district to study food waste in schools. On the study’s recommendations, the school district created share tables for unopened packaged food. The Child Nutrition Services purchased temperature-controlled containers and the Green Schools Program provided signage and educational tools. The food share program has reduced lunchroom food waste throughout the district.
The ceremony is 4:30 p.m. at Maplewood Greens, 4050 Maple Valley Highway.
