On the imaginary banks of the Mississippi River, Heavier Than Air Family Theatre Co. celebrates some of the most beloved characters in American fiction with “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, the musical version of Mark Twain’s classic story.

The exploits of a young boy growing up in the heartland of America are plucked from the book and plopped on stage in this foot-stomping, toe-tapping tale of narrow escapes, comedy and inspiration.

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” premiers at 7 p.m, Friday, in the Performing Arts Building on the main campus of Green River College in Auburn. Performances continue Fridays and Saturdays through April 2.

Set in 1840 Missouri, there’s no end to Tom’s small-town mischief: matching wits with respectable adults, cleverly persuading pals to take on his chores, sneaking through dangerous graveyards at night, and exploring dark caves with renegade friend Huck Finn and the feisty new girl in town, Becky Thatcher.

With actors ranging in age from 9 to 93, the Tony-nominated play is non-stop theatrical fun for the young and young at heart.

Both Twain’s immortal novel and the Ken Ludwig production have become unforgettable family favorites, as well as exceptional choices for tying a simple time in history into school English curriculums.
