When the Auburn School Board convenes for its first meeting in 2020, one long-serving member will not be there to say “here” to the roll call.

Ray Vefik, longtime District No. 1 director of the Auburn School Board, announced at Monday’s evening regular board meeting at the James Fugate Administration Building that he would not seek reelection this November.

“It has been with great pleasure and honor to have served the students, staff and patrons of the Auburn School District,” Vefik said in a posting late Monday evening on his Facebook page.

“I am going to miss my involvement with the school district along with all the friendships that have been part of my life. I wish the best to the Auburn School District, as they go and write their next chapter of their journey,” Vefik wrote.

Vefik, an architect and project manager, earned his bachelors degree from the University of Idaho in 1984. He has served on the board since his appointment in 1998 and kept the seat through every general election since then. He ran virtually unopposed in his last bid on Nov. 3, 2015.

In addition to the director position, Vefik’s peers up for election are: Robyn Mulenga, director, District 2; and Laura Theimer, director, District 4.

Vicki Alonzo, public information director for the Auburn School District, said Mulenga has not formally indicated whether she intends to run again. Theimer, who was appointed last summer to replace Anne Baunach, told district officials during the interview process that she intended to run when her seat came up for election this November, but she has not yet publicly announced her intentions.
