The Kiwanis Club of the Valley, Auburn, presents the inaugural 5K Purple Sock Walk/Run at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Roegner Park, 601 Oravetz Road SE, to support Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Auburn.

Runners and walkers will start at the picnic shelter in the park and head south on the White River Trail with 3K and 5K turnarounds in Game Farm Wilderness Park.

The event honors the city’s DV Awareness Month effort proclaimed by Mayor Nancy Backus on Oct. 7.

Participants are encouraged to wear purple socks, tutus or other purple clothing to show support. Purple socks will be available on site for those who have none to wear. Prizes will be awarded for the most outrageous, funniest or cleverest costumes. Participants are welcome to walk or run with their dogs that can be dressed in purple outfits.

Funds collected from participants and sponsors will go toward local agencies that support women, men and child victims of domestic violence. The agencies include DAWN, the YMCA, Child Haven, and Child Protective Services.

Pre-registration is available online at kiwanisclubofthevalley.org. Registration is $20 online, $25 on the day of the event for adults. Children and adolescents can participate for free.

The Kiwanis organization’s main purpose is to promote children activities and school services. The Auburn breakfast club sponsors two middle school Builders Clubs and one high school Key Club. It sponsors a monthly breakfast honoring middle school students of the month and a high school CTE student of the month.

The Kiwanis Club of the Valley has been serving the Auburn community since 1974 as a local chapter of Kiwanis international. Membership is open to all, and the club welcomes visitors for breakfast any Wednesday morning at 7 at the Messiah Lutheran Church on 4th Street Northeast.
