Did you know unnecessary energy waste in your home could be costing you up to $550 a year? With freezing temperatures fast approaching and the end of daylight saving on Sunday, Nov. 3, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is providing tips for customers to keep costs down during the colder, darker months.
• Get smart with the thermostat.
Heating can account for up to 60% of monthly energy costs. You can save as much as 10% a year on heating by simply turning your thermostat back 7° to 10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. Install and properly set a smart thermostat to make this happen automatically.
• Replace old insulation.
Insulation is like a blanket for your home. The heavier the blanket of insulation is the warmer your home will be. Even adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within a few years. Sealing and insulating can save more than $200 a year in heating and cooling costs. Fill, patch or caulk holes in floors and ceilings connected to unheated spaces. • Update outdoor lighting with LEDs.
Now is the time to check all outdoor lighting as extreme temperatures can shorten the life of bulbs. Where you can, replace old bulbs with LEDs, which use 6 times less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Find out about lighting at: pse.com/lighting.
