The Unleash the Brilliance (UTB) program – committed to closing the achievement gap for students at risk of academic failure – presents a Parent Summit at the Auburn High School Commons on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The gatherings promote family engagement for the betterment of the community, focusing on topics that is specifically customized based on feedback high schools receive from the parent population. Founded in 2008, the UTB workshop, presented by Terrell Dorsey, encourages parents to collaborate with their students to inspire, connect, empower and educate.
The event is free to all, especially parents throughout the Auburn School District and beyond, runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Commons, 711 E. Main St.
A free breakfast buffet kicks off the morning.
There will be numerous community partners on hand sharing valuable resources throughout the event. Summit-attendees are encouraged to arrive early to explore the important information provided by participants such as: the city of Auburn; Auburn School District; AmeriCorps; United Way; Valley Cities; Step Up; King County Library System; King County Health Department; Washington DSHS and others.

Applications for the Bank of America 2020 Student Leaders program are being accepted now through Jan. 31. The Student Leaders program is part of the Bank’s ongoing commitment to recognize youth who lead and serve in their communities, connecting them with tools and resources that will help them make their communities better. Each year, the program awards paid internships to community-minded high school juniors and seniors at a local nonprofit organization, and includes participation in a national leadership summit in Washington, D.C. The Auburn School District Board of Directors recognized Stephanie Knapp, teacher at Lakeland Hills Elementary, as the outstanding staff member of the month for December. Knapp has worked for the district since 2003. Lakeland Hills principal Colleen Barlow said, “Stephanie is one of my all-time most competent teachers I have seen in my 28 years in education. She is dedicated, a very strong teacher leader, and always is willing to go above and beyond. She is a champion for her students.” … The school board recognized Jose Sanchez Valdez, an eighth-grader at Olympic Middle School, for being an outstanding student at the Dec. 9 board meeting. Sanchez Valdez takes high school level courses in geometry and biology. He participates in the Latinos Unidos service club. He also is an avid reader and reads about 10 books every month. Staff members describe Sanchez Valdez as an extremely kind student with a heart of gold. He genuinely cares about school, his peers and his teachers.
