Auburn Youth Poetry Contest: A few of my favorites | James Rodgers

By James Rodgers, Auburn Poet Laureate

As we near the end of April, with National Poetry Month coming to a close, I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of my favorites from the Auburn Youth Poetry Contest. I received a bunch of submissions, and while I’m not a fan of picking favorites, I wanted to highlight a few that made me smile — or think.

Sunlight

Wonder

where

sunlight

hides

beneath

the waves

it is

you

my

child

it is

you

the sunlight

wonder

waves

I know

in my

heart that

you are so

generous

Minecraft

A dim torch lights my way

Illuminating my surroundings

A deep, dark cavern envelopes me in heavy shade

Eerie sounds approaching me from every angle.

Spiders crawling about,

Their webbing obstructs my view.

Finally I saw it, oh! My treasured prize!

There they lay

Right before my weary eyes

Diamonds

The greatest gem anyone could ever possess,

It’s just too bad it all ended with an unseen “HISSSSSSS”.

— By Emma Lats, age 10, Ilalko Elementary

Thanks to all the fun entries, and to all the teachers and parents who submitted. I hope we can have an even bigger group of entries to choose from in 2022!
