Alice Lee Conroy Mayer passed on June 10, 2021, age 91, in the company of loved ones.
Alice, born in 1929, was the second of 4 children of Captain Peter Conroy and Ruth Mary Quinn. A native San Franciscan with 47 first cousins, she grew up in the Sunset District among extended family. Alice attended Parkside Elementary, Lincoln High and San Francisco State when it was still downtown.
Alice married and had 4 children prior to initiating her over 30-year teaching career with San Francisco Public Schools. A social person with varied interests, Alice served in leadership with Catholic Professional Women, Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority, and California Retired Teachers Association as well as serving as a volunteer docent at the De Young Museum.
Alice maintained lifelong friendships, enjoyed travel both domestic and international, and hosted many dinner parties where her guests, including her extended family, grown children, their spouses and her grandchildren, appreciated her fine culinary creations while sitting around her dining room table for hours of jovial conversation. In the final decade of her life, Alice was often in Washington state where she held a second home.
Proceeded in death by her parents, Alice is survived by her children Gregory Mayer and spouse Pat, Carol Turner, Julie Herren and spouse Kip, and Alyce and spouse Ron, as well as, 7 grandchildren Dennis Herren, Ruth Herren Rush, April Herren, Joseph Mayer, Amy Turner, Ellen, and Julia in addition to 12 great- grandchildren counting the baby expected this summer. Alice is also survived by her siblings, Ruth Obuhoff, Joyce Scramaglia, and Peter Conroy, along with their children, Auntie Alice’s beloved nieces and nephews.
Alice will be laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery along with the many Conroys of San Francisco.
