This teenage lead foot couldn’t outrace double-trouble.
In the end, a 17-year-old Auburn driver was zapped twice for his fast actions along Highway 18 and local streets Thursday.
King County Troopers first caught the driver’s draft along State Route 18 at approximately 11:25 a.m. Thursday. Troopers spotted a white 1988 Mazda RX7 ripping along westbound on SR 18 near Auburn after a Washington State Patrol airplane spotted the vehicle roaring at 88 mph in a posted 60-mph zone.
The airplane followed the Mazda as it exited to 304th Street and watched as it drifted through the curves on the off-ramp. A trooper caught up with the Mazda, but not before the driver exited the freeway and was stopped by an Auburn police motorcycle unit for speeding in a school zone.
A trooper contacted the Mazda driver while he was being stopped by an Auburn officer. The Auburn police officer, unaware that the trooper was catching up with the vehicle, had stopped the Mazda after it had passed him speeding in a school zone.
The trooper issued the driver a negligent driving second-degree infraction for his actions on SR 18 and on the off-ramp to 304th Street. Simultaneously, the Auburn police officer issued the driver a school zone infraction for traveling 31 mph in a posted 20-mph zone.
The teen was driving on an intermediate drivers license. Based on his previous history of driving violations, he most likely will lose his license until his 18th birthday.
