Local nonprofit kicks off 8th annual March of Diapers fundraiser

This year’s goal is to collect half a million diapers, founder says.

For the eighth-annual March of Diapers, nonprofit Do the Right Thing is setting the goal of collecting half a million diapers.

The fundraiser collects baby and adult diapers, wipes and money donations from March 1-31. These donations are then distributed to dozens of local organizations serving low-income families from Tacoma to Everett, according to Cheryl Hurst, the fundraisers organizer and founder of Do the Right Thing.

“It’s gotten to the point where I think people just get it, and they get it more when they see the price of diapers,” she said. “You just fill a need when it’s there, and it’s definitely there.”

This year, the nonprofit’s goal is to collect 500,000 diapers and 200,000 wipes. There are nearly 70 dropoff locations across approximately 10 different participating cities for this year’s diaper drive.

Last year, the March of Diapers collected 305,836 diapers and 141,624 wipes, Hurst said.

“Last year was emotionally so unbelievable … I wouldn’t have even dreamt [of receiving that amount of donations],” she said.

Previous recipients of the diaper drive donations included the Federal Way Day Center, the Multi-Service Center in Federal Way, El Centro de la Raza, the Federal Way Senior Center Food Bank, Mary’s Place in Seattle and many more.

“This fundraiser brings out the fact that there are so many really good people in our communities,” Hurst said.

To kick off a March full of diapers and donations, Do the Right Thing is hosting a fundraiser Thursday, March 3 at MOD Pizza (2104 S. 320th Street in Federal Way). You can participate in-person or with online orders by mentioning the nonprofit’s name or the March of Diapers at checkout.

Sponsors of this year’s March of Diapers are Rajiv Nagaich of Life Point Law; Kara Rogers of For the Love of Homes; Advanced Printing Consultants; Chad Erwin of Allstate Insurance; and Lloyd Enterprises.
