City engineers on Sept. 25 described to Auburn City Council members 39 active street projects worth about $101 million, a figure that incorporates several years of budgets and projects with varying timelines.

Of these, 30 projects with an approximate total value of $14 million are in the design phase, and nine are under construction with an approximate total value of $87 million.

The occasion was the quarterly capital projects update to the Auburn City Council delivered by Senior Project Engineer Matt Larson and Project Engineer Nahom Kahsay.

Here is a sampling of what’s in the pipeline.

Construction of sidewalks and curb ramps along the south side of 5th Street Northeast between A and B Streets Northeast. Work is underway.

A new, one-way, eastbound connection between A Street Southwest/South Division Street and A Street Southeast.This constructs a new, one-way, eastbound roadway connection to southbound A Street Southeast, thereby creating a right-only turn-lane that bypasses the congested 3rd Street Southwest intersection, Larson said. The city’s contractor has been struggling to acquire the material to build the steep retaining walls, but expects to break ground this December, Larson said.

Auburn Way South Southside sidewalk improvements project will install sidewalks on the south side of Auburn Way south from Howard Road and tie-in to the existing sidewalk on Muckleshoot Hill. This complex project includes an enhanced, raised pedestrian crossing at Howard Road; construction and improvement of existing stormwater conveyance; preservation of the roadway surface; improvements to street lights. Construction is nearly complete, but is still awaiting material for the street lighting signal, which should arrive by the end of December.

Clear vegetation around the Marchini Meadows storm pond on Lea Hill at the end of Southwest 312th Street. This is an old King County development that was part of the 2008 annexation of Lea Hill that does not meet the city’s maintenance criteria and is overgrown with vegetation. It calls for construction of a cast-in-place concrete retaining wall along the northeast slope. The contractor has broken ground and has cut in a road way to get to the area where it will build a retaining wall between the pond and nearby development. The site has been cleared and the contractor has removed many of the trees and shrubs. The goal is to enable the maintenance and operations crew to get in and mow it regularly.

Riverwalk Drive Southeast, non-motorized improvements, including construction of sidewalks and storm systems along the east side of Riverwalk Drive Southeast and street light improvements. Status is nearly complete, and the project is waiting on street light components.

10th Street Northwest/A Street Northwest intersection improvements including a traffic signal. Estimated project cost is $1.215 million from the arterial street fund. Construction begins in December.
