Youth, teens, seniors and adults of all ages will soon enjoy a new activity center and gymnasium at Les Gove Park, located at 910 9th St. SE.

The public is invited to help the City of Auburn celebrate the beginning of the construction during a special groundbreaking ceremony at the site at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The new 9,850-square-foot Activity Center & Gymnasium will provide a variety of athletic and recreation options for youth, teens, adults and seniors. There will be parking for 68 cars and four vans with room, a drop-off zone and shared lobby entrance with the future Teen/Tween Center. The gymnasium also will feature an outdoor climbing wall and a covered connection to the existing Senior Activity Center.

The building was designed by BLRB Architects, a Tacoma-based architectural firm and is being built by general contractor Christensen Inc. The total estimated cost for the building is $2,896,200 and it is expected to be complete in the spring of 2011. The Auburn Community Center, phase 2, of the overall campus construction project, is slated to begin in mid-2011.

The new activity center and gymnasium will complement the 21-acre recreational and educational Les Gove Community Campus that serves the entire community. The cluster of amenities includes a library, Parks and Recreation Administration Building, Senior Activity Center and White River Valley Museum.

The campus also includes the popular Rotary Spray Park, public art, bocce courts, horseshoe pits, a softball pit, and a soon-to-be completed 32,000-square-foot Barrier Free Playground. A half-mile paved trail encircles an attractive bermed and treed lined area.
