Woman kidnapped in Auburn located alive in Mexico

Law enforcement has located a missing 21-year-old woman in Mexico after her disappearance in a suspected kidnapping out of Auburn.

The Auburn Police Department announced on Oct. 23 that Mexican authorities found 21-year-old Jackelin Perez alive, approximately two weeks after her disappearance on Oct. 13.

According to the Auburn Police Department, Perez confirmed with law enforcement that suspects kidnapped her at gunpoint.

“We believe the kidnapping was related to illegal activity in which she was not involved,” said the department’s Oct. 23 update. “The kidnappers brought her to Mexico and subsequently released her. We are currently investigating the reasons for her release in Mexico.”

Detectives in the case believed Perez to have been taken from her home in a targeted incident.

The Auburn Police Department worked in coordination with the FBI and additional law enforcement agencies to arrest a 24-year-old individual on Oct. 19 in Texas, in connection to the kidnapping of Perez. Law enforcement believe additional individuals to have been involved in Perez’s kidnapping.

Perez, six weeks pregnant, served as a recent immigrant from Guatemala with her husband.

The Mexican government has established communication with the Guatemalan government and will work to transport Perez home to Guatemala, according to the department.
