An Auburn police officer shot and killed a 48-year-old Auburn man last Saturday night after the man allegedly threatened him with a knife in the 1400 block of Harvey Road Northeast.
According to Kent Police Lt. Pat Lowery, the Kent Police Department is investigating the shooting, a routine response for critical incidents.
Initial investigation shows that at 10:22 p.m., the officer stopped a red Honda coupe for a traffic violation on the north Auburn road. Within moments, the driver of the Honda knife in hand, got out of his car and confronted the officer, and the officer fired his handgun.
Auburn firefighters and paramedics arrived within minutes and worked to revive Scaman. Paramedics transported him to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where he died a short time later.
The King County Medical Examiner on Monday identified the man as Brian Scaman. He died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
The man’s female passenger was not hurt. Investigators hope she might help explain why Scaman brandished the knife. The police officer was also not hurt.
Kent investigators worked through the night to collect evidence and interview witnesses. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation. His name has not yet been released.
According to KIRO 7, Scaman had an extensive criminal background.
