No. 10 Auburn Mountainview had no answer for Peninsula’s JaQuori McLaughlin on Friday, with the Seahawks’ shooting guard torching the Lions for 38 points on the way to a 69-58 boys basketball win in Gig Harbor.
McLaughlin, a 6-foot-3 junior shooting guard and University of Washington commit, was 8-of-10 from the field and also poured in four 3-pointers.
“We had to stop McLaughlin, and we didn’t,” said Auburn Mountainview coach Thomas Ostrander.
Peninsula maintains sole possession of first place in the South Puget Sound League 3A.
The Lions (5-1 league, 9-2 overall) entered the second half of the contest with a 29-28 lead, and were down 36-34 in the final minutes of the third quarter when McLaughlin got hot, sparking a 14-1 Peninsula run.
Auburn Mountainview mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to 63-57 with less than a minute in the game, but was unable to catch the Seahawks (6-0, 9-3).
“We have to play better,” Ostrander said. “We have to stop everyone on the team. They had a lot of big 3s. We didn’t do well on the perimeter. We just have to play better.
“We did fine (on offense), probably had too many turnovers,” he added. “We just have to play better. They’re a good team and they just played better.”
Ryan Lacey led the way for the Lions with 17 points, with Robbie Wilson chipping in with 15 and Victor Daggs adding 11.
The Lions will get a second chance at Peninsula when they host the Seahawks on Feb. 3.
The Lions host Enumclaw (2-4, 4-7) at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.
