The federal Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has recognized Auburn School District students Mariah Sonstelie and Alyssa Wall for their tireless efforts to address health inequities and improve the community’s health, especially as it relates to obesity and tobacco prevention.

Sonstelie and Wall were recognized for demonstrating outstanding leadership in developing and promoting the Commit to Fit campaign, designed to empower every child in Auburn to make healthier choices.

A total of 18 local individuals and organizations were honored for their efforts.

The recognition based on nominations from peers is part of Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW), an initiative to join community organizations, local cities, schools districts and public health in addressing the leading causes of preventable death.
