Lizzy Lass nailed Liberty Lake in the final stride for a head victory Friday in the $13,600 Northwest Brewing Purse for older fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.

Lizzy Lass nailed Liberty Lake in the final stride for a head victory Friday in the $13,600 Northwest Brewing Purse for older fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.

Under a rail-skimming ride by Gallyn Mitchell, Lizzy Lass ran six furlongs in 1:11.14 and paid $12.80, $4.60 and $3.40. Roy Lumm is the winning owner/trainer.

Liberty Lake, a 11-to-1 long shot ridden by Julien Couton, nearly pulled off the gate-to-wire victory but was collared in the final jump. The runner-up paid $8 and $3.20

Krazy for Kugel, ridden by Juan Gutierrez, rallied for third and paid $3.20 to show.

A 7-year-old Washington-bred by Outing-Margarita Mabel, Lizzy Lass is 14-6-7 in 49 career starts with earnings of $72,925, including $7,480 for Friday’s win. She now has 10 career wins at Emerald Downs, beginning with her maiden victory on July 4, 2011.

With a slew of long shot winners, a $0.50 Pick 5 carryover of $5,574 is up for grabs Saturday. The Pick 5 begins on Race 5 at 3:57 p.m. . .. Mitchell rode two winners to boost his track-record total to 1,391 victories. Mitchell’s the only jockey to ride all 20 seasons at Emerald Downs. . . . Apprentice Jimmy Guzman notched his maiden victory with a nose triumph on Lots of Prayers ($25.80) in Friday’s fourth race. It was the sixth career mount for Guzman, and the second straight racing day in which a jockey scored his first victory. Cerapio Figueroa broke his maiden Sunday on Wedding Kake. . . . 20 different jockeys already have wins at the five-day-old meeting; last year 22 different jockeys won races at the 70-day meeting. . . . First-time starter Eddie Sue returned a meet-high $44.40 in Friday’s third race for maiden 3-year-old fillies. Francisco Duran rode the Nationhood debutante for owner Daniel Weiss and trainer Brian Lusk. . . . Live racing continues Saturday with first post 1 p.m., one hour earlier than normal. Simulcasts include all 13 races from Churchill Downs including the 141st Kentucky Derby at 3:34 p.m.
