Lake View Elementary School’s Eager 2 Read team recently took second place at the King County Library System’s Global Reading Challenge at the KCLS Issaquah Service Center.

The Lake View squad, representing South King County, faced off against teams from three other regions. Together, the regional champions represented 56 teams and 1,701 students.

The Eager 2 Read team was guided by parent coaches Nancy Ackerman and Karen Grant, and assistant coach/librarian Jan Millgard. The team was comprised of Haley Pond, Ashley Jerke, Oscar Bravo-Leso, Aidan Oheler (co-captain), Devinne Cullimore, Daelyn Haws and Katie Ackerman (captain).

The Global Reading Challenge program is modeled after the popular “Battle of the Books” and has been well received by students in the Auburn School District.

In 2001, the first Global Challenge in King County was initiated with two schools and 42 students.

This event is sponsored by the KCLS and its foundation with funding by the Stocker Foundation.

Food drive pulls in big numbers

Auburn students donated a total of 53,607 pounds and $13,270.68 during the annual All School District Food Drive. Donations were taken from Feb. 21 to March 4.

Auburn Riverside High School, Olympic Middle School and Hazelwood Elementary were division champions. Olympic and Hazelwood are repeat winners.

Auburn Riverside students contributed 4,056 pounds of food and $3,165.87 in monetary donations. Olympic contributed 4,164 pounds and $1,249.41 and Hazelwood gave 8,966 pounds and $975. Each Hazelwood student donated an average of 16.635 pounds of food.

Runner-ups were Auburn Mountainview High School, Cascade Middle School and Dick Scobee Elementary.

The drive surpassed last year’s accumulation of 51,680 pounds.

“The students of the Auburn School District are to be commended for their heart,” said Debbie Christian, Auburn Food Bank executive director. “You come through, every time, just by being asked.

“The clients that you have helped by this generous donation are extremely grateful for your generosity.”

Auburn’s Caroline Craft, Connor Driscoll and Rachel L. Vallejos recently were named to the Gonzaga University’s dean’s list for fall semester.
