Tye Dutcher isn’t too keen on labels. Bring up the terms “handicapped” or “disabled” and the Auburn Riverside junior – who lost his left foot in a lawnmower accident when he was 11 – isn’t shy about explaining why he views them as negatives.
For the first time in school history, the Auburn Mountainview gymnastics squad is competing under the leadership of a new coach. This past season Jayme Hostetter – a former Auburn Reporter Coach of the Year winner who led the Lions to a 3A Washington State title in 2010 – stepped down after eight years. The school then named 3-year assistant coach Andrew Stranack as head coach.
The 2014 Pacific City Council took final form at Monday’s workshop as it voted in its new president and mayor pro tem for the year, as well as swearing in new councilmember Stacy Knudtson and returning councilmembers John Jones and Tren Walker.Knudtson, Walker and Jones, winners in the November general election, are to serve on the council until Dec. 31, 2017.
Next Monday the Pacific City Council plans to talk about extending a moratorium on medical marijuana businesses in the city by an additional six months.
Also up for discussion: whether to add recreational pot businesses – which were made legal by the passage of I-502 – to the moratorium, which expires Feb. 12.

Arizona State University senior Chris Young’s journey from here to there has had its share of twists and turns. Despite being a roundabout for Young – who plays in the 2013 Holiday Bowl on Monday as a starting linebacker for the No. 14-ranked Sun Devils – it has been a fruitful trip. “It’s been an opportunity that a lot of people don’t have,” Young said.. “Even if I don’t get drafted [by the National Football League], I’ve had a great career in football, and I’ll have a bachelor’s degree and a very happy family.”

This summer University of Washington junior Danny Shelton took advantage of a rare opportunity. Shelton, an Auburn High School graduate and a starting defensive lineman for the Huskies, was among 11 UW student-athletes who participated in a study-abroad class in Tahiti, an extension of a Pacific Islander studies class Shelton took as part of his anthropology major.

The City of Pacific officially proclaimed Dec. 11 as Do an Act of Kindness Day in honor of slain Pacific teen Walter Denesha. Denesha, a 13-year-old Mt. Baker Middle School student, was killed by Brandon Suhr on June 1, 2012.
The Pacific City Council voted 5-2 on Monday to lower the speed limit on West Valley Highway from 40 to 25 miles per hour. The reduction, effective Wednesday, Dec. 18, covers the portion of the highway through Pacific, from 56th Place South to 8th Street East.
