The Auburn Riverside girls basketball team defeated Kentwood 59-49 Tuesday in a South Puget Sound League North 4A tiebreaker at Auburn Mountainview High School.
With the teams tied for second with 13-3 league records, the tiebreaker was necessary to decide the No. 2 seed into the SPSL 4A league tourney, which began Thursday.
Auburn senior James West captured the South Puget Sound League North 4A 182-pound title at last weekend’s sub-regional tournament at Kent-Meridian High School.
West swept through the competition in his weight class, winning all three of his matches by pin, including the title match against Kentridge’s Zach Seibel.
Well, folks, another Super Bowl has come and gone. Somehow last Sunday the National Football League once again wedged a game into breaks between commercials to settle the annual question of who the best team is.
Auburn Mountainview was unable to fend off an athletic Lakes boys basketball team, falling 30-22 in overtime in a mini-game tiebreaker Tuesday at Bonney Lake.
Before the postseason picture can completely come into focus, several South Puget Sound League North 4A boys and girls basketball teams will play a series of tiebreakers Tuesday to sort out seeding into this week’s league tournaments.
A win last Thursday against Decatur would have been all Auburn Mountainview needed to claim sole possession of the South Puget Sound League 3A boys basketball title. Despite a game-high 25 points from senior Keith Green however, the Lions (7-3 league, 13-7 overall) were unable to overcome the Gators (6-4, 11-9), losing 58-56 in overtime at Auburn Mountainview High School.
The records keep falling for the Auburn Mountainview boys swimming and diving team. The Lions’ 200-yard medley relay team set a school record with a first-place time of 1 minute, 42.99 seconds at the South Puget Sound League 3A swimming championships at Lakes High School on Saturday.
The Auburn Mountainview gymnastics team will be well represented at next Saturday’s West Central District III 3A meet.
The Lions will move on seven gymnasts led by senior Cassie Hunt who qualified in the all-around competition at this past Saturday’s South Puget Sound League 3A sub district meet with a 32.200 score.
Walking away would have been the easier choice for Auburn Riverside senior Spencer Jones. Three years ago Jones – who has been wrestling since age 4 – was an up-and-coming, 135-pound freshman on the Raven squad. His wrestling future looked bright. Then, just after the league tourney, during a visit to the doctor, Jones got bad news. He had spinal stenosis.
You can learn a lot of life’s lessons in 19 years of coaching. For Auburn Mountainview girls basketball coach Chris Carr, who retires from coaching at the end of the season, the lessons he’s learned from athletes he’s coached will continue to resonate.
Joe and David Munden will have the opportunity of a lifetime this summer.
For David, 37, it’s a chance to lead the USA Junior Karate team at the 19th annual Maccabiah Games on July 17-30 in Israel.
For Joe, 15, an Auburn Mountainview High School student, it’s a chance to compete on his father’s team.
The Maccabiah Games, which are staged every four years following the Olympics, attract more than 7,000 athletes of Jewish-descent from 60 countries. It is the third largest international sporting event in the world.
A 42-year-old Renton man was struck and killed by a semi Monday on State Route 18 in Auburn. According to the Washington State Patrol, Oleg Voznyuk parked his car – a 1993 Toyota Camry – on the eastbound shoulder of SR 18 near the SR 167 interchange around 12:30 p.m., exited and began running into traffic.
Senior Spencer Fisher poured in 19 points to lead the Trojans to a 57-55 win over Kentlake in South Puget Sound League North 4A action Thursday at Auburn High School.
Things were looking good for the Auburn Mountainview boys swimming and diving team coming into the 2012-13 season.
Except for one little problem – no divers.
Sure, the team boasted a strong core of returning swimmers – including Cameron Lindsay, the reigning Washington State 3A 100-yard backstroke champion – but with their top diver from last season injured, the Lions were looking at losing points in the diving competition at every meet.
Much of what we think we know we learn from movies.
This includes pervasive impressions and prejudices about Native Americans.
“Indians have been more defined in the eyes of other people by their portrayal in the movies,” said Lance Rhoades, a University of Washington film scholar.
Now that Pacific’s existence is ensured for another year, the political infighting in the city has nastied up a notch.
At Monday’s City Council meeting, Councilmember Gary Hulsey called out Mayor Cy Sun for statements on his blog.
In a recent posting at www.mayorcysun.blogspot.com, Sun questioned Hulsey’s military service record and his service as a Washington state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Last Sunday was an emotional day in the Skager household. For the last six months our Sunday routine has revolved around our beloved Seahawks. Now the ride that was the team’s 12-6 run – including a magnificent 24-14 come-from-behind playoff win on the road against the Redskins and an almost as glorious comeback at Atlanta that fell just short with a 30-28 loss – was over.
Auburn boys basketball coach Ryan Hansen knows full well the value of a little bad press.
“Some of the preseason coaches’ polls had us picked to finish seventh out of nine teams,” Hansen said. “We’ve used that as bulletin board material. It’s kind of lit their fire.”
So far this season those flames have been well stoked, with the Trojans perched atop the South Puget Sound League North 4A heap with a 8-1 record, 9-4 overall.
It’s been seven years in the making for the Auburn Mountainview boys swimming team, but the Lions can now lay claim to being the best swimming squad in town.
