It took three tries, but Auburn’s Michael Mangrum is finally a collegiate All-American wrestler.
Mangrum, the Pac-12 Conference’s 141-pound champion from Oregon State, took fifth place at the NCAA Wrestling Championships last weekend in St. Louis.
After eight years as the head coach of the Kentwood program – a stint that included a state 4A title and State Coach of the Year honors in 2010 – Aarstad means to work a bit of his mojo on the Ravens.
Aarstad takes over for Chris Garrison, who has retired after 16 years as the program’s only head coach.
“It was all family based,” Aarstad said of his decision to take the Ravens job. “I live five minutes from Auburn Riverside (at Lake Tapps). When the job opened up, I applied and was fortunate enough to get the job.”

Auburn Mountainview boys swimming coach Justin Pritchard may have had an inkling of the glory that awaited junior Cameron Lindsay at the state 3A championships on Saturday.
After a second-place performance in the 100-yard backstroke in preliminaries on Friday, Pritchard said he was anxious to see what his top swimmer could pull off in the finals.
“It was exciting, he was so close to getting that top time (Friday) to get the song to walk out to,” Pritchard said. “You just wonder how they’re going to swim in that situation, right in the middle with the second fastest time. You just start wondering what they’re going to do next for you.”
In prelims Lindsay had notched a 52.82-second finish, just behind Andrew Weiss of Mercer Island’s 52.44.
Lindsay, however saved his best for Saturday, defeating his former King County Aquatics teammate Weiss 51.29 to 51.35, and grabbing the Washington State 3A 100 back championships.
