Briefs: Chamber to hold Auburn Area Trade Fair

The Auburn Area Trade Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Auburn SuperMall, next to the Black Market Minerals outlet. Admission is free.

The event, presented by the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, will showcase products and services to the community residents, business owners and managers.

There will be door prizes and free gifts.

• Construction law specialists Saphronia R. Young, J.D. and Rita F. Amer J.D., M.A., will conduct a free seminar devoted to public works contracting. The seminar is scheduled 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the Federal Way Public Library, 848 S. 320th St.

The seminar will focus on how to find out about jobs that are open for bidding and what types of public work will be getting funded and how to set your company up for success by being approved as a “responsible bidder” and the bidding process. For more information, call 253-833-3004.

• The Rotary Club of Auburn’s annual golf tournament at the Auburn Golf Course on Sept. 11 raised more than $16,000 for various children’s benefits in the area.

• The City of Auburn’s Solid Waste Division is launching its first ever Food-Scrap Recycling Program for Auburn businesses. Offices, restaurants, grocers and other businesses can put all waste from their lunchroom, kitchen or catering operations in a separate container collected for off-site composting.

For a limited time, Auburn businesses are eligible for the following incentives from the City of Auburn’s Solid Waste Division if they sign up to turn their business food scraps, flower trimmings, coffee grounds, waxed cardboard and paper napkins into compost for local parks & gardens before Dec. 31:

– Free program setup assistance, staff training, site assessment, posters and stickers.

– Free biodegradable bags and Slim Jim containers for initial setup.

– Free recognition on the City of Auburn and Cedar Grove Composting Web sites.

– Free green business marketing tips.

• The Seattle office of the Washington State Department of Revenue is hosting a free workshop for new and small business owners 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at 2101 4th Ave., Suite 1400, in Seattle.

Participants will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales tax collection, and record-keeping requirements. All receive a workbook and helpful reference guide to Department of Revenue rules and regulations.
