Using beloved icons to promote atheism has got to be an all time low. Banners currently seen on Metro buses are putting words in Santa’s mouth that the descendant of St. Nicholas, from which the Santa Claus legend sprang, would never say, i.e., “Yes, Virginia, there is no God.”
Born during the third century, Nicholas was raised to be a devout Christian by his wealthy parents. He obeyed Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor.” He used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and became known for his generosity to those in need and his love for children.
Nicholas was ruthlessly persecuted for being a Christian, suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration: St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6.
Too bad folks have to be visually assaulted by such cheap shots. How about at least giving equal time and post banners with Santa proclaiming, as his forefather St. Nicholas did (only in more modern language), “Jesus is the Reason for the Season”?
