The only reason the Vietnamese should be memorialized would be if their boots were on our ground to help us defend ourselves against an enemy invading the United States of America. That has never happened.
To display the Vietnamese flag alongside the flag of this country at our Veterans Memorial Park would be as much of a hateful insult to those Americans who served and died in Vietnam as the Confederate flag is to African-Americans who have to live with the racism that they believe that flag represents.
The placement of a Vietnamese flag and memorial would not cause a cleansing of the hatred placed on our servicemen and women by the Americans who opposed that conflict. Yes, I said “Americans”, who created that hatred and spat on our returning military personnel, not Vietnamese.
The idea of such a memorial should not cost any Auburn resident a single penny, and should be on another site, not our current memorial. This is also just another progressive “make us feel good” idea.
Make us feel good by not allowing this memorial to be created.
