I am an Auburn native who has seen many years of flooding in this beautiful, fertile valley of ours before the Howard Hanson Dam was built.
I’m writing in reference to the letter by Betty Kovacevich (“Support Life,” Auburn Reporter, Jan. 8) regarding cutbacks in Planned Parenthood. I would ask if she or anyone she knows has needed the services offered by Planned Parenthood. I and many women I know have used their services.
Recent comments about solving the animal control cost problems by euthanizing animals made by Mayor Pete Lewis come as a slap in the face those of us who have been volunteering time, money and other resources to rescue and place animals.
Free books. Free movies. Free music. Free internet. Sounds great. Oh, yeah. We already have it all? … at the library.
Jan. 11 marked the eighth anniversary of the opening of the detention center at Guantanamo. It is my understanding that this is where torture techniques were field tested before being exported to Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq. It remains a blot on the American character. I am ashamed that President Obama has failed to deliver on his promise to close this center.
From a recent Covington City Council meeting I was disappointed to hear that, as a Transportation Benefit District, the council is considering levying a $20 licensing fee for every vehicle in Covington.

Laurie Rose, manager of Auburn’s art programs, laid off. What a wonderful way to cap a yearlong celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Auburn Arts Commission.
I live in the River Mobile home park. This past year we have spent much of our time talking about and preparing for the “Flood of 2010.” I have been told that some of the older residents have prepared so well that they do not have a picture on the wall and most of their stuff is either on the top shelf or has been moved to other family homes.
The governor’s budget does nothing to address a family planning funding crisis that will result in more clinic closures and unintended pregnancies. In the budget, family planning is scheduled to be cut by another $3 million on July 1, 2010, on top of the $500,000 per year cut instituted in the first year of the biennium.
Using beloved icons to promote atheism has got to be an all time low. Banners currently seen on Metro buses are putting words in Santa’s mouth that the descendant of St. Nicholas, from which the Santa Claus legend sprang, would never say, i.e., “Yes, Virginia, there is no God.”
After reading the Dec. 11 article in the Auburn Reporter regarding the assignment of City Council members to subcommittees and…

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would eliminate the middle man in student loans, saving $87 billion. To keep the bill from faltering in the U.S. Senate, we need to contact U.S. Senators and insist that they not be influenced by lobbying from lending institutions.
