Driving through Auburn last week, my mother and I took a right turn on a red light after making a complete safety stop. The adjacent line of cars was turning left, making our maneuver possible. Having made this same turn at this exact intersection for countless years, we thought nothing of it.

That is until we got a $92 ticket in the mail the next week. It’s frustrating that after many years of driving on this road we were tricked by the sign’s new presence. But that’s not what this letter is about. The fact is that we were caught by a camera, not a policeman.

As a child I was taught to give respect to law-enforcement officers. But it’s disappointing to see that instead of doing their jobs, they use cameras to catch “criminals.” Now, as all other careers require hard work to be done in order to gain money, I feel it is unfair. We didn’t do anything wrong and we did not hurt anyone. But it’s as if we were sneaking around at night, and they had to set up cameras for when they could not be there. If they do their jobs correctly, cameras would not need to be used.

So, I’m proposing that all red-light cameras be taken out of the City of Auburn. I feel this should be done as soon as possible before more innocent people are penalized.
