Auburn Symphony Orchestra’s season beings with “Nordic Spring” – featuring the works of Norway’s Edvard Grieg (1865-1957) and Finland’s Jean Sibelius (1843-1907).

The orchestra, under internationally-renowned conductor Stewart Kershaw, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Auburn Performing Arts Center, located at 700 E. Main St.

Prior to each performance, an extended pre-concert lecture will be held in the theatre where Kershaw and KUOW host Dave Beck will focus on the story behind the composers and their music. The lectures will begin 45 minutes prior to the concert.

Dedicated to the pursuit of a national sound and identity for their respected cultures, both composers – Grieg and Sibelius – studied abroad recognizing the importance of becoming well versed in the works of the European masters. By the end of their careers, they had successfully developed their own individualistic tonal language mixing modern with simple folk-like themes for a distinctly “national” flavor that are all Grieg and Sibelius to the core.
