The Washington State Fair welcomes indie rock band Modest Mouse and special guest Built To Spill on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Modest Mouse, formed in 1993 in Issaquah, was one of the most surprising commercial success stories of the new millennium.

While their music was by turns taut and elliptical, and the lyrics sometimes cryptic and introspective, the band broke through to the mainstream audience with the platinum-selling Good News for People Who Love Bad News, and they became genuine rock stars at a time when their musical peers remained cult figures.

Over the last decade, Modest Mouse has become the indie rock standard and one of the few bands capable of treading the narrow path where massive popularity is possible without sacrificing their longtime fans. The band’s sixth album, Strangers to Ourselves, was released in March 2015.

Twenty years on from first signing to Warner Bros. Records, Built To Spill returned in 2015 with its eighth studio album, Untethered Moon. That’s now two complete decades that one of America’s leading “indie rock” bands has happily made its home on a major label, and in the process redefined that clumsy descriptor of independence by operating wholly and consistently under its own steam, taking the proper time to craft timeless songs and playing endless, epic shows to a growing grip of fans each year.s

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1. Tickets are $85, $75 and $58 and include fair gate admission. Tickets will be available on the fair website or by phone at 888-559-FAIR (3247) daily, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the state fair’s box office at 9th Avenue Southwest and Meridian Street on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Online and phone purchases are subject to standard processing fees. Tickets purchased on site will be charged a $2 per ticket service fee.
