The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra has scheduled auditions for the 2010-2011 season.
MVYSO’s performance opportunities will include area events such as the Maple Valley Tree Lighting, Fourth of July Fireworks, Waltz Gala Ball and a Seattle Thunderbirds game.
Auditions are scheduled for Aug. 25, 26 and 30 from 3-7 p.m. and Sept. 1 from 10 a.m.-noon. Auditions will be held at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 23855 SE 216th St., Maple Valley. There is a $10 fee.
The symphony boasts four orchestra programs:
• The beginning strings program is for the budding musician who would like to learn to play the violin, viola or cello.
• The debut orchestra, a new group designed for students with one-to-three years of playing experience, is open to those who play strings, brass, woodwind or percussion instruments. The music and curriculum are geared toward building confidence and skill in playing and performing in a group setting.
• The philharmonia orchestra is designed with the developing musician in mind. The music and curriculum are geared toward nurturing the young musician in skill and performance, generally those with two-to-four years playing experience.
• The symphony orchestra is for advanced students who are looking to be challenged musically with exciting performance opportunities. Generally, symphony orchestra students have four-plus years of playing experience.
For auditions, students should prepare a two-minute solo piece that reflects their playing abilities. They also will be expected to sight-read during the audition. Students wishing to audition for the debut orchestra may prepare a one-minute solo or an excerpt from a band or orchestra book.
