Lyric Opera Northwest performs “Tosca” at 4 p.m. May 20 at the Auburn Performing Arts Center, 700 E. Main St.
The show features Federal Way soprano Grace Eun singing the title role of Tosca, and musicians of the Federal Way Symphony led by maestro A. Brian Davenport.
Puget Sound Italian tenor Gino Lucchetti sings as Cavaradossi. Scarpia is sung by Korean baritone sensation Yuseok Oh. A third Federal Way performer, Nancy Bartley, sings in the Lyric Opera Northwest chorus and portrays a devout churchgoer.
The powerful melodrama is set in Rome with the Kingdom of Naples’s control threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy in 1800. There, Floria Tosca — a celebrated opera star, Cavaradossi — a rebellious painter, and Scapia — a lustful and corrupt police chief – engage in a deadly test of will punctuated by torture, extortion, murder and suicide.
Yet it features a pair of Puccini’s most beautiful arias beloved by singers and audiences alike — Tosca’s Vissi d’arte (“I lived for my art”) and Cavaradossi’s E lucevan le stelle (“How the stars shimmer”).
Tickets can be ordered online at www.lonw.org, or by phone at 206-938-7820. Tickets are $38 general admission, not including fees.
