The Auburn Symphony Orchestra, under internationally-renowned conductor Stewart Kershaw, opens its 15th season Oct. 8-9 at the Auburn Performing Arts Center.

Ah, Youth! features Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie Overture, Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto with 12-year old trumpet soloist Natalie Dungey, and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 1.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at APAC, 700 E. Main St.

Natalie, a prodigy from Issaquah, won the junior division of the National Trumpet Competition in 2010. She plays Hummel’s Trumpet Concert on a trumpet that originally belonged to Wynton Marsalis.

Natalie grew up in a musical family. Her mother is a professional violinist and her father a professional trumpeter and band director. Dragging an old trumpet, Natalie begged her father to teach her, but he thought she was too young. Undeterred, she proceeded on her own to practice out of a method book, and eventually her dad relented. beginning her formal lessons at age 7.

Just before her 9th birthday, Natalie advanced to the National Trumpet Competition Junior Division semifinal round in Fairfax, Va. At the same competition, when she was 10, she rocked the trumpet world with a performance that spread internationally on YouTube.

Along with her dad, she has been taught by some of the best instructors around and continues to compete nationally. Natalie has performed on NPR’s From the Top, has performed a solo at Benaroya Hall written for her by Mateo Messina, and has performed with orchestras throughout the Northwest.

Natalie played Leroy Anderson’s “Trumpeter’s Lullaby” as an encore to ASO’s February 2010 program.
