The world renowned Glenn Miller Orchestra makes a big band appearance at the Auburn Performing Arts Center with the Auburn Bravo Series at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12.

Touted as one of the most successful bands of the genre, the Glenn Miller Orchestra continues to play in the style created by their namesake. Believing that a band should have a sound all its own, Miller’s musical product has spanned the decades and continues to bring out fans to both their sit-down concerts and full-fledged swing dances.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra was originally founded in 1938 and featured a sound very different from other bands of the time. Musically arranged around a clarinet and tenor saxophone playing melody, while three other saxophones played the harmony, the successful orchestra would eventually see copycat bands attempting to duplicate their sound.

Miller would join the Army in 1942 where he personally modernized the military band that would raise the moral of millions of soldiers worldwide. Miller himself would disappear on a performance related flight to Paris in 1944.

In 1956 the Glenn Miller estate organized another Orchestra in Miller’s style which still performs today with bands in the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom.
