3 Auburn students earn leadership scholarships

Three Auburn residents – Sylvia Agaton of Muckleshoot Tribal School, Nathanael Asbury of Fife High School and Jennifer Nguyen of Auburn Mountainview High School – are among the 90 recipients of the Comcast Foundation's annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards in Washington state, the Foundation has announced.

Three Auburn residents – Sylvia Agaton of Muckleshoot Tribal School, Nathanael Asbury of Fife High School and Jennifer Nguyen of Auburn Mountainview High School – are among the 90 recipients of the Comcast Foundation’s annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards in Washington state, the Foundation has announced.

Among Agaton’s’s past and present achievements: volunteering for the Muckleshoot Canoe Journey and Muckleshoot Tribal School Potlatch and participating in the National Indian Education Association Bureau of Indian Education Government Study Closeup.

She lettered in varsity basketball, participated in the creative writing magazine and received several academic honors. Agaton has worked as a library page and teacher’s aide. At the time the school nominated her for the scholarship, Agaton was planning to study mathematics at the University of Puget Sound.

Among Asbury’s achievements: serving as student body president and participating in South Puget Sound League Association of Student Councils,  participating in the track and field team and volunteering at the Tacoma Rescue Mission. He is planning to attend Washington State University.

Among Nguyen’s achievements: holding student body office and volunteering for the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Society and Key Club, and participating in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) State Conference CAPS Project (Chapter Awards Project) and Washington Association of Student Council (WASC). At the time the school nominated Nguyen (inset photo) for the scholarship, she was planning to study education at the University of Washington, Seattle.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers  Scholarship Program provides $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.

“Each year, we are excited to provide scholarships for these talented students,” said Charisse R. Lillie, president of the Comcast Foundation and vice president, Community Investment of Comcast Corp. “Comcast seeks students who demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities and who reflect a strong commitment to community service.  These students are our future leaders, and we hope these scholarships will help to power their dreams for success.”

To date, Comcast has awarded nearly $19 million to nearly 19,000 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners.
