3 killed in head-on collision on Valley Freeway

Three people were killed in a head-on, multi-vehicle crash on Highway 167 in Auburn early Sunday morning.

The driver of a car entered northbound the freeway in the wrong direction, crossed three lanes and struck another vehicle head on, according to Washington State Patrol.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was a 21-year-old Kent woman. The driver of the second car, 69-year-old Marina Martinez of Renton, also was killed, as was the passenger in her car, 72-year-old Cesar Martinez.

WSP Troopers do not suspect drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.

A third car was involved in the crash, but the State Patrol said two people in that vehicle, a 40-year-old man and a 42-year-old man from Seattle, did not suffer serious injuries.

Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to a 911 call at 1:37 a.m. for a reported three-vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of the Valley Freeway, just south of 277th street. The initial report stated that two of the vehicles involved in the accident might have collided “head on” at a high rate of speed.

VRFA and King County Medic 1 personnel arrived on location with State Patrol and found three persons trapped in the vehicles. The three persons rapidly were extricated by fire crews from two of the vehicles; two others were self-extricated from a third vehicle prior to emergency personnel arriving on the scene.
