Rep. Morgan Irwin, R-Enumclaw, and Rep. Drew Stokesbary, R-Auburn, were recently sworn into office as state representatives for the 31st District.
On Saturday, Pierce and King County Council officials appointed Irwin to fill the vacant 31st District House seat left by Phil Fortunato, who succeeds departing state Sen. Pam Roach.
Irwin was officially sworn in Monday by Associate Chief Justice Charles W. Johnson. Irwin’s legislative priorities include strengthening public safety laws to protect families and keep communities safe, fully funding basic education and reforming schools to meet the needs of the current economy, and improving the state’s transportation infrastructure. He will serve on the House State Government and Transportation committees.
“I appreciate the confidence both Pierce and King County Councils have placed in me to represent the 31st District and serve the people of Washington state,” Irwin said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to find commonsense solutions to ensure our communities and families are safe, our children receive a quality and equitable education, and our failing transportation infrastructure is repaired.”
Also on Monday, Stokesbary took the oath of office to begin his second term in the state House of Representatives. His legislative priorities include fulfilling the state’s obligation to fully fund education, putting forth alternative tax reforms to make the state’s economy stronger and more competitive, and passing a balanced, sustainable budget. He will serve as deputy budget writer for the House Republican Caucus and sit on three House committees – Appropriations, Education and Finance.
“I am excited to get to work on the challenges facing our state,” Stokesbary said. “I will continue working to ensure all students, regardless of zip code, have the opportunity to receive a world-class education. I also look forward to working with my fellow lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to pass a responsible budget on time and without having to raise taxes.”
The 31st District borders Pierce and King counties, and includes the areas of Auburn, Edgewood, Sumner, Lake Tapps, Bonney Lake, Enumclaw, Buckley, South Prairie, Wilkeson and Carbonado.
