Auburn Garden Club participated in its first Veterans Day parade last Saturday.
The club’s special guest, World War II Navy veteran Alma Ray, escorted the club for the ride along Main Street as the Auburn-area community paid tribute to service men and women.
The club has been active since it was established in 1924.
For at least the last 25 years, the club has made centerpieces for the Veterans Day lunch and planted a tree on Arbor Day.
For the last 10 years, club members helped city arborist Kirk Hadley plant 6,000 annuals at the Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation greenhouse.
The club’s purpose is to stimulate knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs, to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and birds and encourage civic beautification.
The club’s theme this year is ‘Saving the Earth One Garden at a Time.’ Membership is open to the public.
The club meets most of the year on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Auburn Senior Center, 808 9th St. SE.
The club is asking members and guests to bring a donation for the food bank to the meetings.
